MBA programs run the gamut from general management to very specific areas of management. Most students are able to find online MBA concentrations or dual degree programs that meet their career goals. However, others desire highly personalized MBA programs.
At least two self-designed online MBA programs are offered by accredited universities. The first, which is offered by the University of Dallas, is referred to as the interdisciplinary or custom MBA program. In addition to taking core business courses, students with the interdisciplinary concentration complete five elective courses from any of the university’s business concentrations (including human resource management, information technology, and many others). For example, the school suggests combining classes in global business with finance courses to create a custom concentration in international finance. Another possibility is designing a health services marketing concentration.
A second customizable program is offered by Walden University. Students in the self-designed program take eight credits in customized online courses in addition to studying abroad or completing a field study. Field study provides students with the opportunity to complete an independent research project in their specific area of interest.
Other Options
Other online universities might be open to customizing MBA programs although they do not advertise this option. Talk with admissions counselors about possibly designing a unique program.
More options include earning a graduate certificate in a specific area of business management or taking individual online courses from a school such as the University of Phoenix or the University of Maryland.
